Members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and occupations and range in age from high school to senior citizens. Many have been playing with the band for over 40 years. The Downriver Community Band (DCB) is a traditional concert band performing works from a wide variety of musical styles and eras. Their music library includes marches, big band, classical, jazz, show tunes, contemporary and original compositions. Founded in 1989, the DCB is an all volunteer wind and percussion ensemble for adult musicians based in the Downriver area. The DCB's mission is to give non-professional adult musicians a dynamic and enriching opportunity to perform, contribute positively to the cultural environment of the Downriver area and provide an opportunity for personal musical expression and growth. The DCB is made up of players from various levels of musicianship. Members come from all walks of life including teachers, professors, scientists, business professionals, students, physicians, contractors, realtors, housewives, and retirees. Throughout the year, the DCB performs concerts at various indoor and outdoor venues. Many of these concerts are FREE to the public and are performed at charity benefits, festivals and other special events. The DCB also performs in the summertime "Concerts in the Park" program in participating Downriver communities.

The North Oakland Concert Band, comprising more than 80 dedicated musicians, is one of Michigan's leading wind ensembles. With roots deep in the Lake Orion and Oxford area, the band draws audiences from all of Southeast Michigan. Band membership is by audition, and includes many professional music educators. Led by Music Director Annette Kline, the musicians of the North Oakland Concert Band delight in performing a broad selection of concert band music, with styles ranging from traditional marches and classical transcriptions to modern works written especially for the concert band.

Professor Vincent Chandler and the WSU Jazz Warriors

Vincent Chandler, is a native Detroiter and protégé of one of the strongest era’s of the Detroit jazz scene, having studied and/or performed with local heroes such as Donald Walden, Kenn Cox, Harold McKinney, Teddy Harris, Marcus Belgrave, Matt Michaels, Francisco Mora, Eddie Nuccilli, Wendall Harrison, Spencer Barefield, Ronald Kischuk, James Carter, Marion Hayden, Regina Carter, and Rodney Whitaker. He has also performed internationally with jazz legends such as Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, Joe Henderson, Clark Terry, JALC feat. Wynton Marsalis, Oliver Lake, Bobby Watson, Geri Allen, Roy Hargrove, Ravi Coltrane, JD Allen, Marcus Strickland, Wycliff Gordon, Walter Smith III, Robert Hurst, Jeff “Tain” Watts, Russell Malone, Randy Brecker and Ambrose Akinmusire. He is a featured soloist on “Requiem,” from Roy Hargrove’s only Big Band CD called “Emergence,” James Carter’s “At the Crossroads,” and Rodney Whitaker/Carl Allen’s “Work to Do.” In 2014 he released his first CD as a bandleader, called Vincent Chandler “Embraceable,” including Robert Hurst on Bass.

Mr. Chandler earned his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music and a Masters of Music in Improvisation from the University of Michigan. He was a Graduate Student Instructor and eventually a Lecturer of Jazz Studies at the University of Michigan. He was an Instructor of Jazz Trombone and Jazz Octets at Michigan State University. He was an Instructor, Director of Jazz Studies at Claflin University and an Applied Low Brass Instructor at South Carolina State University.

Mr. Chandler has a reputation for being a uniquely expressive trombone soloist, a versatile sideman, innovative composer and arranger, a crowd pleasing scat singer, an experienced bandleader of various group sizes and a natural teacher of beginner to advanced students.

The Warren Concert Band, under the direction of Jeremy R. Duby, is a team of volunteer musicians banded together to perform serious and recreational concert band repertoire. Founded by Donald Engstrom in 1972, and conducted by Thomas Carey until his sudden death in 1984, the band has experienced consistent improvement throughout the years. With a well balanced instrumentation of 65 members, the Warren Concert Band is able to perform contemporary and traditional band compositions and transcriptions with polish. Douglas Bianchi, Director of Bands at Wayne State University, led the band from 1985 to 2010.

A new band in town, the Swing Syndicate offers an entertaining concert featuring swing band classics.
About the Band. Swing Syndicate was formed in 2023 by Travis Cook and Mike Wiese.  Seasoned veterans of the Metro-Detroit jazz scene, Cook and Wiese wanted to play in a band that rehearsed efficiently, performed with power and style, and at least paid for gas and a beer after the show.  The resulting group is a hard-hitting combination of some of Metro-Detroit's finest talent:

The Belgian American was established in 1932 to promoted the love of music and arts among the Belgian community in the sprit of excellence. They endeavor to provide time-honored entertainment for the Belgian American Community. The Troy Heritage Band was formed over 60 years ago in Hamtramck and for the past 12 years have performed in a variety of Troy community events and local churches. Many members play in both bands and they are combining for River Blast 2023.

The Town Band, an ensemble of the Washtenaw Community Concert Band, is a 20-piece vintage music group that plays only music from the 1880–1920 period, in period-appropriate costume and with period-appropriate instruments. This is the only ensemble in our area devoted to the music of the "golden age" of the "town band" movement in the USA—an era before recorded music was readily available. This late 19th and early 20th Century musical movement was heavily influenced by the great touring concert bands led by such as Gilmore, Sousa, Creatore, Conway, and Prior. The Town Band is under the direction of Jerry Robbins.

The Plymouth Community Band, under the direction of Carl Battishill, is composed of 55-75 volunteer, amateur musicians (winds & percussion) who enjoy coming together to make music in a “concert band” arrangement. Members come from all walks of life, have diverse backgrounds and experiences and range in age from teenagers to octogenarians. The Plymouth Community Band was founded in 1960, as a German “oompah” band, and has remained intact ever since, evolving into its current concert band arrangement. They are perhaps best know as Plymouth’s “Concerts in the Park” band, due to their long-standing tradition of performing six Thursday night concerts in Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth in June and July. The band rehearses once a week, year round (except for August), and performs other outdoor concerts as well as a slate of indoor concerts during the school year.

Under the direction of Scott Cramer, Novi Concert Band is a symphonic wind ensemble comprised of an all volunteer group of instrumental musicians from the western Detroit suburbs (SW Oakland County and Western Wayne County). The band was formed by the City of Novi Parks and Recreation Department in 1982 to provide adults with a musical background an opportunity to participate in musical performances throughout the Greater SE Michigan area. This talented group of adults performs nearly a dozen annual public concerts throughout the region. The Novi Concert Band performs music ranging from standard band literature (Sousa and Karl King marches), to movie music arrangements, big band jazz, and seasonal favorites.

In the spirit of the great American Peace Jubilee of 1869 under the direction of the noted musician and composer Patrick S. Gilmore comes the Peace Jubilee Brass Band.This band presents the latest and the most favorite tunes of the late 19th and early 20th century using historic over-the-shoulder brass instruments that were commonly used by community brass bands across America after the Civil War. To add to the occasion, the band will appear in appropriate dress to add to the authenticity of the event. The music is comprised of polkas, quick steps, schottisches, marches, and even waltzes, where couples are allowed to embrace each other—scandalous!

Rea Deal Big Band

Formed in 2006 by two top Detroit musicians, Leo Rea, a trumpet player, and Vaughan Klugh, a guitarist, the ReaDeal Band began rehearsing with 6 players and quickly grew to a full sized 17 piece big band with 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, and a rhythm section including piano, bass, drums, and guitar.  Their first opportunity to play in public was at Bert’s Marketplace in the Eastern Market area of Detroit, where they performed many times, with several top Detroit area singers, including Gary Sacco and Joan Crawford.  The band continued to perform at many venues in the metro area, including various clubs, and several  outdoor parks during the summer. With the passing of Leo Rea in October of 2012, the band members decided to continue playing the fine music book that Leo had assembled and began rehearsing at the Birmingham Unitarian Church in Bloomfield Hills, under the leadership first, of Wally Fitz, and later, John Hammer.

Under the direction of Kevin Czarnik, the Royal Oak Concert Band is a community band which presents a series of concerts throughout the year. This sixty-piece ensemble performs a variety of music, from big band classics to major symphonic works. It is an adult community band open to all area residents. The ensemble rehearses from September through June at Royal Oak Middle School and performs a wide range of repertoire. The ROCB  features a season of four concerts at Royal Oak Middle School, as well as outdoor performances at area parks. The band is open to adults who have attained at least a high school level of performance.  New members are welcome throughout the year. There are no auditions.
